It’s easy to get into the habit of wearing make up any time you leave the house, however, there’s one place where a full-face of make up can harm the health of your skin: the gym.

In an interview with Byrdie, celebrity make up artist and industry veteran Jo Baker said:

“The sweat factor, tight clothing and lighting at these workout venues can be a vulnerable place for us, but I highly recommend taking the naked, bold approach with your skin. Let yourself be free, rub your eyes without mascara on them, and let your natural rosy-cheeked flush shine through. I believe it is very important for us to love ourselves with and without makeup, and the gym is a great healthy way to let your skin do what it’s supposed to: breathe and sweat and flush out any unwanted toxins that need an easy exit path. With makeup, you are encouraging congestion which can lead to bacteria buildup and breakouts.”

Consultant dermatologist and British Skin Foundation spokesperson Dr. Anjali Mahto told Elle UK that it’s best to avoid wearing make up to the gym:

“Sweat and increased temperature brought on by exercise can lead to open pores which can become blocked by particles of make up. This can easily lead to breakouts and, in turn, uneven skin texture.”

Wearing make up to the gym is also a wasted effort since facialists highly recommend a post-workout facial cleanse anyway.

If You Must…

While Baker votes “NAY” on wearing make up to the gym, she understands the need to conceal a “major breakout that is red and unsightly”. For that, she suggests a natural tea tree concealer. Our minds immediately thought of bareMinerals Blemish Remedy Concealer, which is formulated with Tea Tree Oil, Aspen Bark and Kaolin Clay. And if you’re just not comfortable with heading to the gym foundation free, bareMinerals Blemish Remedy Foundation can help provide coverage while promoting healthier skin.
Baker also approved of brow gel. We recommend HD Brow Beater, which conditions while it also tames and holds brows in place all day.

While we agree it’s best to avoid make up when exercising, SPF is a must if you’re getting your fitness on outside. Protecting your skin against premature ageing from sun damage and skin cancer is imperative. A great way to give conceal imperfections while also protecting against harmful UV rays is by applying bareMinerals SPF 15 Original or Matte Foundation.
